SUDBURY
To create hope, build skills and generate political will in the neighbourhood by reclaiming the natural environment in the city core! That is the major objective of the Green Space Preservation Program in Sudbury, Ontario. The program operates under the aegis of the Sudbury Better Beginnings, Better Futures Association, a local community development corporation. The Association is part of a province-wide seven-year research demonstration project funded by numerous government agencies and non-profit groups, to look at the effectiveness of community-based child and family programs. The organization was originally sponsored by the N'Swakamok Native Friendship Centre. Foundation support has allowed the community to hire a naturalist, who has also helped to garner additional funding locally and provincially to complete the redesign of two neighbourhood parks and to involve children and their families in an engaging educational approach to environmentalism. Based in a disadvantaged area known locally as the Donovan-Flour Mill, the Sudbury project has provided income and training to community leaders to organize and work in their own communities, thereby freeing their energy, creativity and imagination for healing their own neighbourhood. A plentiful array of programs is offered, covering such themes as leadership development, community safety improvement and child care. Better Beginnings Better
