Save Our Living Environment (SOLE) is an urban, street-level environmental group whose members live in single-room units in Vancouver's downtown Eastside. Many inner-city residents rely on collecting materials for recycling to supplement their incomes. In response, SOLE devised an ambitious project to clean up street lanes and collect discarded items for recycling and reuse. The community benefits in many ways from cleaner lanes, which become healthier, safer, and more attractive. Participants develop new skills and self esteem from accomplishing a difficult and necessary task. In the process, they also promote a positive working relationship between local businesses and residents, and improved attitudes about their neighbourhood.
