OTTAWA
TRANSIT ADVOCACY

Canada's National Capital Region is the home to one of the most innovative and active transit advocacy programs in the country. The Transit Advocacy Project is part of the national Transport 2000 Canada interest group involved in research, education and advocacy. It was started to enhance the role of transit in the lives of people in Ontario's Ottawa-Carleton Region.

The project's volunteers, representing 18 diverse civic organizations,, support initiatives aimed at promoting policies and practices which ensure public transit is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

A guide to public transportation planning is helping to make the transit-planning decision-making process easier to understand and more responsive to consumers. TAP has also served as a catalyst in a joint city-regional study to examine development opportunities around transit stations, rallying community concerns relating to environmentally-sensitive, transit-friendly land-use planning.

Amending the federal income tax act to allow for tax-exempt employer-provided transit passes is another TAP focus. Organizing public information events, developing a travelling display, and appealing to elected officials are all part of the project's effective use of its limited resources.
