URBAN ECOLOGY CENTRE

Based in a heritage greystone building in the Milton Parc area of Montreal, the Urban Ecology Centre exemplifies environmentally sound renovation practice and materials. Its extensive educational and research programs examine critical city?wide issues such as transportation, land use, economic development, energy use, recycling and other sustainable development strategies. Springing from a strong base of citizen activism, the Centre is supported by the Société de développement communautaire de Montréal, a non?profit organization which also publishes the award?winning monthly community newspaper, Place Publique. The Milton Parc area is where a major citizen?developer confrontation occurred in the late 1960s, resulting in the largest non?profit cooperative housing project in Canada.
