MI'KMAQ CULTURE
Urban First Nations communities face many challenges in preserving the richness of their heritage for future generations. In Halifax, for instance, Mi'kmaq people are dispersed across many areas of the city, leading to isolation and assimilation. The Urban Mi'kmaq Culture Project, aimed at holistic community development, offers special programs around First Nations culture, spirituality, crafts and the Mi'kmaq language to encourage its use. Participation is open to both the urban First Nations population and the community at large. The Urban Mi'kmaq Culture Project is formed through the cooperation of the Mi'kmaq Child Development Centre and with Tawaak Housing, a First Nations non?profit housing association.
