FUNDING PROGRAMS
Reflecting the Bronfman family's desire to promote problem-solving initiatives, the Foundation prefers to contribute to organizations across Canada which can act as "agents of change". The Foundation has identified these areas as its funding priorities:

Cultural Management Development
The Foundation supports programs that bring about improvements to the overall level of governance and management of not-for-profit arts and heritage institutions and organizations. The Foundation promotes, in particular, the concept of arts stabilization requiring multi-sector partnerships. Programs are pre-selected by the Foundation and receive core or project funding for a number of years. Although financial support is long-term, it is not indefinite. Each funded project is evaluated semi-annually.
Major funding is provided to the Centre for Cultural Management at the University of Waterloo and its interactive learning web site, the Cultural Management Institute.

Futures
As
part of its on-going research to renew its philanthropic program,
the Foundation investigates a new area of interest every three years
in order to gauge its potential involvement for future funding. The
Foundation is now providing major funding to the National Arts &
Youth Demonstration Project, a three-year study exploring the potential
benefits of community-based arts programs to young people 10 to 15
years of age. Researchers from McGill University, in collaboration
with five organizations across Canada, will examine how and why young
people are attracted to arts programs and the outcomes of their participation.

Since 1977, the Foundation has recognized on an annual basis the work of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of the crafts in Canada. The $25,000 Saidye Bronfman Award is Canada's foremost distinction for craftsmanship and one of the largest individual arts awards in the country. The jurying process is administered on behalf of the Foundation by The Canada Council for the Arts. Funds are also provided to the Canadian Museum of Civilization for the purchase of works by each recipient for the museum's permanent collection.
